Lancer: Final Preparations

Lancer Project: Prep for paint

As usual, the most tedious part of any paint job is the preparations : ( After countless hours spent in applying body filler and sanding it down, now its time to prepare the parts where you don't want paint to seep in.

Always opt to remove the parts that you can easily remove. It is more practical to remove parts like lights, moldings, etc. rather than to mask over them.

A good example is the lancer's cheek lights -

It could be easily pried out using a flat screwdriver.

Afterwards, the wires are held together by a simple connector - this beats masking them and getting the lines right.

There will be times when you'd rather mask over it especially if you're in doubt you might break the part of or if it is too difficult to remove (door handles are an example).

Although the fenders were still good - I decided to paint them together with the hood so that I get an equal and consistent silver color. There are various shades of gray and it would be a shame if the hood is a shade darker or lighter than the fenders.

I removed the old emblems by using a fine piece of nylon thread and some box cutters. I forgot to take pictures but its fairly easy to do :( TIP: Be very thorough when masking - i use old newspaper whenever I paint since we have lots of it. :) Make sure everything is sealed shut. Paint is sprayed as a mist and and could seep in though little gaps. Better be safe than sorry :)

For the roof - I decided to paint just half of it to save on paint - this was a wrong move! I'll share with everyone what happened next time.

The challenging task of painting metallic silver next time! Stay tuned! :)
